The landscape is part of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park , featuring dense forests of beech, hornbeam, and oak. The "Steinbachtal" area on the west side is a 100-hectare protected nature reserve.

The river loop is situated between Merzig and Mettlach. Although these towns are only about 2 km apart as the crow flies, the river winds for nearly 10 km to navigate the steep, forested hills.
