Tick Tock: A Look Back at Al Pacino’s "88 Minutes" Released amidst a flurry of mixed critical reception, the 2007 thriller remains a curious entry in Al Pacino’s late-career filmography. Directed by Jon Avnet , the film attempts to blend the high-stakes urgency of a ticking-clock narrative with the psychological depth of a forensic whodunit. The Race Against Time

Interestingly, Al Pacino reportedly turned down the role of Frank Costello in The Departed (2006) to star in this film instead. Critical Legacy: So Bad It’s Good?

The plot follows (Pacino), a world-renowned forensic psychiatrist and professor whose expert testimony famously put serial killer Jon Forster (Neal McDonough) on death row. On the morning of Forster’s scheduled execution, Gramm receives a chilling phone call from an electronically altered voice informing him he has exactly 88 minutes to live .

As the clock winds down in what is roughly real-time, Gramm must navigate a maze of suspects—including his own students and associates—to identify the copycat killer before his time expires. The specific timeframe of 88 minutes is deeply personal, tied to a tragic event from Gramm's past involving the murder of his younger sister. Production and Release

Pacino is supported by a notable ensemble, including Alicia Witt , Leelee Sobieski , William Forsythe , and Amy Brenneman .
