Cut a small vertical slit at the side seam or back waistband.

"Smile lines" or strained fabric across the front or back, indicating the garment is too tight.
Sew a long "baste" stitch to test the movement. Sit down to ensure it’s not too tight.
When adding panels, ensure the fabric grain of the new piece runs in the same direction as the original garment to prevent weird twisting.
