Set roughly a decade after the revolution in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes , the story finds Caesar (Roddy McDowall) leading a primitive society where apes and humans attempt to live as equals. However, the peace is paper-thin. Caesar faces internal opposition from the militant gorilla Aldo, who views humans as nothing more than cattle.

The central theme of Battle is the struggle against destiny. Throughout the series, the "future" was established as a dark, nuclear wasteland where apes eventually enslave humans.
