The story is set in the small mining town of , located in the desert of northern Mexico. When the local silver mine closes and the government decides to cancel the train route that connects the town to the rest of civilization, the community is left on the brink of abandonment. Most residents plan to leave, but Durán , a young railway mechanic with dreams of becoming a steam engine conductor, proposes an "impossible" solution: building their own steam locomotive from scratch to keep the town alive.
