Enraged and jealous, Commodus murders his father and seizes the throne. When Maximus refuses to swear loyalty to the new Emperor, Commodus orders his execution and the murder of his family. Maximus narrowly escapes but returns home to find his wife and son crucified and burned. Exhausted and grieving, he collapses and is captured by slave traders.

During a reenactment of the Battle of Zama, Maximus leads his fellow gladiators to an upset victory against the "Romans". Forced to reveal his identity to a shocked Commodus , Maximus famously declares his intent to have vengeance "in this life or the next".
