Much like The Shining , the film relies heavily on the "haunted hotel" trope. The crumbling Victorian architecture and the impenetrable fog create a sense of being trapped in another dimension.

Simultaneously, a wealthy family—the Brooks—arrives on the island with a real estate architect to survey the property for potential purchase and renovation.
