The seeds of Swan Lake were sown long before the Bolshoi commission. In 1871, Tchaikovsky composed a small children’s ballet titled The Lake of the Swans for his nieces and nephews, using wooden toys to act out the story. When the Bolshoi Theatre offered him 800 rubles to compose a full-length ballet, he recycled themes from this family play, blending them with inspirations from German folk tales and the tragic life of King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
